OnePlus 9 series launch confirmed for March 23

Soon after the announcement, a teaser video of the handset was uploaded on Twitter by the company’s official account. Apart from disclosing the OnePlus X Hasselblad news, the video gives us a glimpse of the upcoming handset. The smartphone looks a lot like what we saw in leaks and rumors. It has a rectangular camera bump with a quad-sensor camera setup, an LED flash, and the Hasselblad logo.

Moreover, OnePlus’s CEO has confirmed that the handsets will ship with a charger in the box. Thankfully, the company has not succumbed to the new trend of shipping smartphones without chargers.

As far as the company’s new partnership is concerned, allegedly they have partnered for three years where OnePlus will invest $150 million in R&D to help Hasselblad take its camera game to the next level for the years to come.

While talking about this new partnership, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said,

OnePlus has always prioritized a premium user experience over everything else. Beginning in 2021, we are making a concerted effort to significantly improve the smartphone camera experience for our users, with the expertise of a truly legendary partner in Hasselblad.

OnePlus aims to bring Hasselblad’s calibration prowess and image processing to its smartphones for more accurate colors and images.

Sony has designed an all-new Sony IMX789 sensor for OnePlus 9 phones and their Hasselblad cameras. It comes with dual native ISO, full-pixel Omni-directional autofocus, can record 4K video at 120 fps and supports real-time HDR video processing.

The sensor also features Sony’s Digital Overlap HDR (DOL-HDR) that can capture several exposures simultaneously, which helps remove ghosting caused by moving objects. Here is the teaser video Sony uploaded on its YouTube channel.

The video demonstrates the freeform lens for the ultra-wide-angle camera that has only 1% distortion as compared to 10-20% for a typical aspheric lens. Moreover, the system uses two cameras placed lengthwise along with the phone with two prisms redirecting light 90°. The images from the cameras will be stitched by the image processing system creating a 140° field of view.

Although other details about the upcoming handsets are still under wraps, from what we know, they will come with amazing camera specifications and the picture quality will be unmatched.
