UAE is Trying to Make Peace Between India and Pakistan: Report

United Arab Emirates (UAE) is reportedly attempting to broker a peace roadmap between nuclear-armed neighbors, Pakistan and India.

According to media reports, UAE’s Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, went to India on a day-long visit just 24 hours after Indo-Pak DGMOs, on 25 February, agreed to respect the 2003 ceasefire agreement at the Line of Control in the disputed region of Kashmir.

An official UAE readout of the 26 February meeting provided some clues of what the UAE and Indian counterparts discussed behind closed doors but noted that all regional and international issues of common interest came under discussion.

However, sources privy to the meeting claimed that both sides termed the Indo-Pak ceasefire as only the starting point of a larger roadmap brokered by the UAE which envisages a lasting peace between both nuclear-armed neighbors.

In the next step of the peace process, both sides will reinstate envoys in Islamabad and New Delhi, who were called back after India revoked the autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir on 5 August 2019 by abrogating Articles 370 and 35A of its Constitution.

The apparently easiest part of the peace roadmap will be followed by the hardest part which will involve holding discussions to resume bilateral trade and finding a durable resolution to the Kashmir conflict.

Foreign Affairs Ministries of India and Pakistan didn’t issue any comments following the 26 February meeting and UAE’s Foreign Affairs Ministry declined to comment regarding its role in finalizing the peace roadmap.

Pakistan and India have had made several attempts to make peace over the years but all efforts ended prematurely. However, this seems by far the most concerted peace effort made in years as signs are evident that relations between both countries are getting warmer.

On 18 March, while addressing the Islamabad Security Dialogue, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Qamar Javed Bajwa, urged India to “bury the past and move forward.” A day earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan had called for a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict.

Over the weekend, Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, wished PM Imran a speedy recovery after the latter tested positive for COVID-19.
