At the peak of the Coronavirus outbreak in January 2021, over 1,000 deaths were reported daily among this age group. Around 700 people in their 80s and 300 people in their 70s died every day across the UK.

However, on Tuesday, only 56 deaths and 4,040 new cases of Coronavirus were reported in all age groups around the UK. It is the lowest daily death tally across the UK since October 2020.

People aged 80 years or above now account for less than half of all deaths reported daily in the UK, compared to the two-thirds before the start of mass vaccination drive.

Deaths among citizens in their 50s and 60s have decreased by 44% and by 28% among citizens aged 50 years or less. Most people in these two age groups are awaiting the second dose of the Coronavirus vaccine.
