LHC Sends Notices to British Council & Education Ministry Over Exams Issue

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to the British Council, the Pakistan Director of Cambridge, and the Federal Ministry of Education regarding a petition challenging the government’s decision to conduct on-campus examinations for the O-Level and A-Level students despite the growing threat of COVID-19 in the country.

Several Cambridge students have petitioned the Lahore High Court through Barrister Hassan Khan Niazi against the decision. They have stated that the O-Level and A-Level classes had not been held for the entire academic year and that the syllabus was incomplete, besides the rampant pandemic in Pakistan.

They also stated that despite these conditions, the government wants the students of the CIE system to physically appear in the examinations while putting their lives and those of their families at risk.

The petitioners also highlighted that Cambridge had given the countries with a high number of COVID-19 cases two options — to conduct the examinations in the traditional manner; or to allow the candidates to avail of their school-assessed grades. The government of Pakistan had apparently chosen the first option that involves a lot of risk to the students’ lives and futures.

It maintained that the last date for the countries to inform Cambridge of their decisions is 17 April and that the examinations will start on 4 May for the O-Level and on 26 April for the A-Level.

The plaintiffs said the Ministry of Education and the local authorities could prevent this from happening by requesting Cambridge for the school-assessed grades.

They have sought the court’s intervention and directives for the government to request the British Council and Cambridge to switch over to the options of school-assessed grades and to avoid risking the health of the candidates.

The court has issued notices to the respondents, asking them to file their replies by 12 April.
