COVID-19 Positivity Ratio Raises Alarms as Eid Draws Near

With Eid-ul-Adha just around the corner, COVID-19 cases in the country have recorded a massive increase of 28.5% within just 24 hours as the virus’s fourth wave appears to set in.

According to National Command and Control Center (NCOC), 2,545 COVID-19 cases were recorded across Pakistan on Thursday, up from the 1,980 cases reported yesterday.

This is the first time in well over six weeks that Pakistan has recorded over 2,500 cases of Coronavirus in a single day. The last time the country reported more than 2,500 cases was on 29 May when 2,697 cases were confirmed.

Similarly, the COVID-19 positivity rate has reached 5.2%, up from the 4.17% a day earlier. This is also the first time in more than a month and a half that the positivity rate has gone beyond 5%. The last time the country recorded a positivity rate of more than 5% was on 23 May when it reached 5.22%.

SAPM on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan, has requested the public to follow SOPs, such as face mask-wearing and avoiding crowded spaces, and get themselves vaccinated against COVID-19 as early as possible from their nearest Mass Vaccination Centers (MVCs).

Federal Planning Minister, Asad Umar, who also heads the NCOC, has said that a rapid buildup has started taking place in the inflow of COVID-19 and critical care patients, a considerable number of whom have been diagnosed with Delta variant, at hospitals.
