Saudi Arabia Launches Smart Card For Hajj-Related Services

Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Chairman of the Central Hajj Committee, has officially launched ‘smart card services’ for this year’s pilgrimage in a historic-first development.

Termed as “Shaeer,” the smart card comes equipped with NFC (near field communication) technology which would help pilgrims use self-service machines at various holy sites during their pilgrimage.

According to a Saudi press release, the smart cards are linked to all the services provided to the pilgrims, including entry to hotels in Makkah and tents in the holy sites, as well as using transportation.

Furthermore, this card can be used in payments through points of sale (POS) and to guide pilgrims on to their camps, governing access to camps and timing of grouping and transportation.

The Deputy Minister for Hajj and Umrah Services, Dr. Amr Al-Maddah, discussed the underlined development with state media, explaining that Saudi Arabia has always exerted efforts to serve pilgrims during Hajj seasons.

The smart card has been launched to complete the Hajj’s technical system, which is aimed at providing quality services to everyone during the pilgrimage, he added.
