Former Sri Lankan spin bowling legend, Muttiah Muralitharan has named Pakistan captain, Babar Azam as one of the current players that would have been able to play him better. Muralitharan said that Babar has a solid technique and he would have been able to tackle his variations.
Muralitharan was interviewed by a former Indian batsman, Aakash Chopra on ESPNCricinfo where he was asked about his opinion on which current players would have been able to play him consistently. The legendary spinner also named Indian captain, Virat Kohli, as one of the best batsmen of spin in modern times.
“Kohli would have been tough as he is a good player of spin. Babar Azam, I’ve never seen but looks like one of the better players because he is from the subcontinent,” Muralitharan stated.
Babar is one of the best players of spin bowling in the Pakistan team, and his record against spin bowling across all three formats is formidable. Babar’s batting average against spin bowling is immaculate in all three formats. His batting average in Tests is 51.7, 87.3 in ODIs, and 73.6 in T20I cricket.
His record against right-arm off-spin is magnificent as well. He bats at an average of 66.3 in Tests, 67.1 in ODIs, and 165.0 in T2oIs. He has been dismissed only 16 times and has scored 1,166 runs in 89 innings against off-spin bowling across all formats.
