Prisoners in Punjab Can Now Open Bank Accounts

Prisoners in Punjab can now open personal bank accounts after the Department of Jails and The Bank of Punjab (BoP) agreed to facilitate it.

Inspector-General (IG) Prisons, Mirza Shahid Saleem, and BoP President, Zafar Masood, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the initiative.

Subsequently, prisoners can now open accounts with the BoP. The development also entails allowing their family members to send them money via EasyPaisa and JazzCash.

Prisoners will reportedly also be able to maintain their accounts during transfers between prisons and withdraw money from their accounts even after they are released.

IG Saleem explained that the online banking system will contribute to eradicating possible corruption in the system.

In a similar step toward the welfare of prisoners in the province, the provincial Minister for Home and Prisons, Col. (retd.) Muhammad Hashim Dogar, announced the introduction of vocational training earlier this week.

While presiding over a meeting of the Jails Reforms Committee, he stated that the ministry is working on providing inmates access to the top vocational training facilities so they can live better lives after being released from jail.

The meeting was held to discuss the growing number of prisoners, as well as various proposals for the provision of basic facilities such as food, health care, entertainment, and shelter, in compliance with international standards.

Minister Dogar mentioned that Punjab has over 50,000 prisoners and assured that he would prioritize addressing all their problems.
