Pakistan cricket team of former legends registered their second win in the ongoing World Championship of Legends by defeating West Indies by 29 runs at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.
After a successful opening match against Australia, where they won by five wickets, the Men in Green continued their strong performance against Chris Gayle’s West Indies team.
Opting to bat first, Pakistan’s innings began on a shaky note as Kamran Akmal fell early, scoring only 5 off 7 balls. However, Sharjeel Khan’s aggressive 15-ball 35 stabilized the innings. Sohaib Maqsood contributed with a quick 12-ball 22, but it was Shoaib Malik who anchored the innings with a solid 41-ball 54, featuring five boundaries and a six.
Shahid Afridi chipped in with a brisk 10-ball 16, and Aamer Yamin provided a late flourish with a 29-run blitz off just 11 balls, helping Pakistan post a competitive total of 194/8 in their allotted 20 overs. West Indies’ Ashley Nurse was the standout bowler, taking 3/20, while Fidel Edwards claimed 2/46.
In response, the West Indies’ chase was primarily supported by opener Dwayne Smith, who scored 65 off 46 balls, and Jonathan Carter, who added 34 off 25 balls. Despite their efforts, the rest of the batting lineup faltered under the pressure applied by Pakistan’s bowlers.
Pacer Sohail Tanvir led the bowling attack of the Pakistan cricket team with an impressive 4/14, while Shahid Afridi continued his all-round performance by taking 3/41. Wahab Riaz also contributed significantly with figures of 2/18, as West Indies managed to reach only 165/9 by the end of their 20 overs.
The victory marks the second consecutive win in the tournament for the Pakistan cricket team, boosting their confidence as they progress in the World Championship of Legends 2024.
