The Lahore High Court on Friday ordered the government to take strict action against brick kilns in Punjab that contribute to pollution. Justice Shahid Karim instructed authorities to place notices on all kilns across the province and stated that if violations persist, the kilns should be demolished. The judge was hearing petitions regarding the lack of effective measures to combat smog.

Justice Karim criticized officials for working against the government’s vision to reduce pollution, noting that despite many government announcements, nothing substantial was happening on the ground. He warned that if kilns in Sheikhupura were not made to comply with the rules, the deputy commissioner would be suspended at the next hearing. Additionally, action will be taken against the deputy commissioners of other districts where kilns are causing pollution.
The judge set a 10-day deadline for vehicles coming from other districts to Lahore to obtain fitness certificates. He also instructed the government to establish battery charging points in the city to promote electric bikes.
Justice Karim acknowledged that many people depend on the polythene bag industry for their livelihood and emphasized the need for an alternative. He called for a clear method for recycling plastic shopping bags. The judge also requested a report on water wastage in motorway service areas and the status of trees planted along the motorway. The hearing will resume next week.
