ICC Suffer Heavy Losses Hosting 2024 T20 World Cup in USA

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly incurred losses of approximately USD 20 million from hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 matches in the United States, according to media reports on Thursday.

This significant financial setback is expected to be a major topic of discussion during the ICC Annual Conference, which begins on Friday in Colombo. While the issue is not formally included in the nine-point agenda of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), it will be addressed as part of a “post-event report”.

The losses stem from various factors associated with hosting a portion of the tournament in the USA, including the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan held in New York.

Another major topic slated for discussion at the AGM is the potential replacement of current ICC chairman Greg Barclay by BCCI secretary Jay Shah. An ICC source indicated that there is significant interest in when Shah will assume leadership of the world body.

“It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling off period in the Indian board starts in 2025 as per the constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, then Barclay can’t complete his third term of two years from December 2024 to December 2026,” the ICC source told Press Trust of India (PTI).

A possible solution being considered is changing the ICC chairmanship term from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, maintaining a cumulative term of six years.

This adjustment would allow Shah to complete his tenure as BCCI secretary and assume the role of ICC chairman in 2025 for a three-year term during his cooling-off period from the BCCI. Subsequently, he could return and take over as BCCI president in 2028.
