The French authorities decided to simplify the procedures for foreigners in the country who wanted to renew their residence permit application receipt.
Starting July 15, 2024, a new procedure allowed foreigners to request the renewal of their residence permit application receipt online through a form posted on the State Services website, Schengen. News reported.
While the authorities had yet to disclose additional information on the matter, the renewal application was simplified, and the link directing foreigners to the form was made available as soon as the new rules became effective.

As of July 15, 2024, a new procedure was posted on the website to allow the renewal of residence permit application receipts. The old link for this procedure was removed on the same date, and replaced by a link to the simplified procedures.

What Is a Residence Permit Receipt & Who Needs It?
A residence permit receipt is a document that proves a foreigner in France has applied for a residence permit or its renewal at their prefecture, allowing them to legally reside in the country.
The receipt permits foreigners to enjoy the same rights and privileges as those who already hold a residence permit while their file is being examined.
In most cases, foreigners holding a receipt were also allowed to take up employment before their residence permit was ready. The receipt, valid for four to six months, allows the holder to stay in France for the specified duration while the prefecture examines the residence permit application.
However, in cases of a large number of applications, the examination could take more than six months. In such cases, receipt holders were able to apply for a renewal, which could be extended for up to three months.
Receipts were also issued to those whose residence permits had expired. While their residence permit was being renewed, this group of foreigners was granted a receipt with a validity period of three months.
