French President Macron and Olympic Committee Rejects Palestine’s Demand to Ban Israel from Paris Olympics

The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, and French President Emmanuel Macron have rejected a demand from the Palestine Olympic Committee to bar Israel from participating in the Paris Olympics due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The Palestinian request, detailed in a letter to the IOC, argued that Israel’s actions in Gaza violated the Olympic truce, citing bombings and restrictions that allegedly have resulted in the deaths of approximately 400 Palestinian athletes and significant damage to sports facilities. The letter highlighted the challenges faced by Palestinian athletes, particularly in Gaza, who are “denied safe passage” and suffer under “severe restrictions.”

IOC President Thomas Bach, in a press conference in Paris, stated,

The position of the IOC is very clear. We have two National Olympic Committees, that is the difference with the world of politics, and in this respect, both have been living in peaceful coexistence.

He noted that the Palestinian National Olympic Committee, despite Palestine not being a recognized UN member state, enjoys the same rights and opportunities as all other NOCs.

French President Emmanuel Macron echoed the IOC’s decision, asserting that “Israel athletes are welcome in our country” and emphasizing France’s commitment to their security for Paris Olympics. In an interview with France 2 television, Macron condemned any threats to the athletes, stressing that “they must be able to compete under their colors because the Olympic movement has decided it.”

The Palestinian appeal underscores the broader impact of the Gaza conflict on international events like the Paris Games, as well as the ongoing debate over the participation of nations involved in conflicts. Some French politicians have drawn parallels with the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes over the Ukraine conflict, but the IOC and French government have reaffirmed their commitment to including all eligible athletes in the Games.
