PSL Franchise Owners Call for An Independent Board

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise owners are advocating for the creation of an independent board to oversee the league’s operations.

Nadeem Omar, chairman of the Quetta Gladiators, has been a prominent voice in this regard, highlighting the unique challenges the PSL faces compared to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Omar argues that a dedicated PSL board, with its own chairman and administration, would streamline decision-making processes and address issues more effectively.

He pointed out that the current setup requires communication with PCB’s Salman Naseer, due to the busy schedule of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, which complicates direct problem-solving.

“If we have a separate chairman for the PSL, we can discuss issues directly and resolve them more quickly” Nadeem Omar stated.

The upcoming PSL season’s schedule had to be revised to fit around the Champions Trophy, resulting in an overlap with the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year.

This overlap has raised concerns about foreign players potentially favoring the IPL over the PSL. Omar mentioned that they had proposed the idea of holding the PSL franchise without foreign players if necessary.

Omar also voiced concerns about the risks of scheduling the league in April next year, noting the lack of alternative windows.

“We had to take this risk because there was no available window after April,” he said. “Players were very committed in the first four editions, but now they don’t seem to play with the same passion,” he concluded.

Reflecting on the Champions Trophy, Omar believes that a strong performance by Pakistan could boost the PSL’s value. He also noted a decline in player enthusiasm, which was high during the first four editions but has waned in recent seasons.
