In a world where the pace of change is relentless, the future hinges on the capabilities of today’s youth. However, the current state of economic indicators paints a picture of concern and even alarm. Today, the youth, or individuals aged between 15 and 24 make up 16% of the global population. This ratio is expected to rise by 7% by 2030. In Pakistan, the age group between 15 and 29 makes up a staggering 29% of the total populace.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) reports that unemployment rates for these individuals can be as high as 14% in some regions. The Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24 puts this number at 11.1% for the nation. At a time like this, creating job creators rather than seekers has become a top priority.
Fortunately, though, the world in general and Pakistan in particular, has seen a growing number of collaborative initiatives aimed at empowering young people with the skills and mindset needed to navigate and shape not just their own future but also become leading lights for others. To understand the impact of such initiatives, it is useful to look at an actual example.
One such transformative effort is the collaboration between Jubilee Life Insurance and SEED Ventures, which has been making waves in the realm of youth empowerment and entrepreneurship for over five years.
This partnership, rooted in a shared vision, began with a simple yet profound goal: to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership potential of Pakistan’s youth.
The journey started with the Enterprise Challenge Pakistan, an initiative of the King’s Trust International and SEED Ventures, is national competition designed to introduce school students to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. The initiative quickly gained traction, engaging over 6,500 students across the country and sparking their interest in business and innovation.
As the program evolved, so did its impact. Recognizing the need to expand this initiative, Jubilee Life Insurance launched the University Challenge Pakistan, a platform that extended the reach of entrepreneurial education to university students. Initiated in January 2024, the program commenced with two of the country’s top business schools evaluating over 120 applications to finalize five groups that presented unique solutions to tackle pressing challenges in the local insurance sector.
“The youth currently make up almost 60% of Pakistan’s population which puts them in a position to drive the future of the nation. The University Challenge is a pilot program launched by Jubilee Life which is directed at these future leaders and we eventually aim to extend its reach further, providing more talented individuals the most effective resources and mentorship available to polish their ideas and ultimately bring them to life.” said Mr. Farhan Faridi, Group Head, Retail Operations, Marketing and Administration at Jubilee Life Insurance.
“Our collaboration with Jubilee Life Insurance has been a path of mutual development and shared ambitions. The University Challenge epitomizes our dedication to fostering entrepreneurial skills and encouraging innovative ideas from the youth of our nation. We believe this initiative will serve as a model for industry-academia partnerships and catalyze significant advancements in the insurance sector.” said Ms. Shaista Ayesha, CEO – SEED Ventures.
Partnerships between corporate entities and Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) are not merely about financial support or branding; it is about creating a sustainable ecosystem where young minds can flourish. These collaborations, focused on providing participants with real-world skills, mentorship, and opportunities to develop and pitch their business ideas, are critical to empowering the youth of the country.
Moreover, the broader impact of these programs is evident in the way that they foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Pakistan. They have shown that with the right support and resources, young people can be powerful agents of change. This shift in mindset is critical for a country where a significant portion of the population is under 30, as it lays the foundation for a more dynamic and resilient economy.
Contributing to Pakistan’s overall development and progress, initiatives like Jubilee Life Insurance University Challenge are stitching together a future where young people are not only prepared to face the challenges ahead but are also equipped to seize opportunities and drive innovation.
The story of Jubilee Life Insurance and SEED Ventures is not just a story of success; it is a story of possibility, showing what can be achieved when nations believe in the potential of their youth and commit to nurturing it.
