Punjab Announces Massive Relief for Expired Driving License Holders

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a major relief for those with expired licenses. The increased fines for expired driving licenses before January 16, 2024, have been abolished.

Citizens with driving licenses that expire before January 16, 2024, can renew them with the old fine. For licenses expiring on or after January 16, 2024, the new fee rates will apply.

Previously, fines for expired licenses ranged from 75 to 500 rupees per year. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Ammara Athar, stated that the renewal fee for learner permits will remain at 500 rupees.

She added that citizens can renew international and regular licenses from home as well as at license offices. Athar emphasized that there will be no leniency in the crackdown against underage and unlicensed drivers.

On the other hand, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government announced it would launch a comprehensive investigation into the fake international driving license scandal. The inquiry will be conducted by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and a provincial committee.

The scandal surfaced when Pakistani missions overseas attempted to verify driving licenses issued to expatriate Pakistanis by the KP Transport Department, only to discover that the records were not available in the department’s database.
