No Silver Medal For Vinesh Phogat After CAS Dismisses Her Appeal

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected the appeal of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat. The global court turned down Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification from women’s wrestling at the Olympics.

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg wrestling final due to being overweight at the Paris Olympics 2024 as she weighed 100 grams more than the stipulated body weight according to her category in the competition.

Phogat had filed an appeal on the first day, arguing that her weight was tinkered, seeking a silver medal. Today, the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed her appeal.

She appealed, requesting credit for the three wins she earned after weighing in successfully on Aug. 6. In a brief decision, the court stated that the appeal of the female wrestler was not upheld, while a detailed decision will be issued later.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, the supreme authority in sports disputes, announced that a judge conducted a hearing on Friday concerning Phogat’s case against United World Wrestling and the International Olympic Committee.

Although the court initially anticipated a decision by the end of the Olympics on Sunday, it extended the deadline to Tuesday, granting arbitrator Annabelle Bennett additional time due to “exceptional circumstances.”

The situation brought to light concerns about the dangers of weight cutting. The Olympics have only six weight classes, instead of 10 for other international competitions.

India’s tally at the Paris Olympics remains at six medals in total which includes, one silver and five bronze medals.
