Ben Stokes is making strides in his recovery from a hamstring injury, with hopes high that he will be fully fit for England’s tour of Pakistan in October.
The injury that occurred during a match in ‘The Hundred’ earlier this month, has kept the 33-year-old all-rounder out of England’s current series against Sri Lanka.
Stokes has already begun light batting practice, though he remains cautious about his progress. “I’m just slowly progressing,” Stokes told the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
“It’s still early days in the rehab period, but I’m itching to get back. Being around the medical team here with physios and doctors is giving me the best chance of a swift return.”
England’s interim captain, Ollie Pope, offered a tempered outlook on Stokes’ immediate return but expressed confidence in his readiness for the Pakistan and New Zealand series.
“He’s still a while away from playing, but it’s great to see him in the nets,” Pope said. “Injuries, while never ideal, provide a chance for reflection and improvement, and I’m sure that’s what he’s focusing on.”
Ben Stokes also weighed in on Pope’s adjustment to the captaincy, acknowledging the mental demands of the role at the highest level of the sport.
Reflecting on his temporary absence, Stokes admitted that watching England’s recent victory from the sidelines was a strange experience but emphasized his eagerness to rejoin the team as soon as possible.
Pakistan will play three Tests against England from October 7 to October 28. The first Test will take place in Multan while the second Test will be held in Karachi and the last Test will be hosted in Rawalpindi.
