Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Friday accepted the resignation of Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan from the post of Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, and gave the charge of the post to Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal with immediate effect.
Khan’s resignation was accepted with immediate effect, in lieu of one month’s pay, according to a notification issued by the Establishment Division. However, Khan will continue performing his duties as the Secretary Apex Committee of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).
According to sources, Khan and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal had differences over a number of issues. The minister had also complained to the prime minister about the Deputy Chairman. Sources further said that Khan tendered his resignation at the prime minister’s request.
Khan, a former chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue, was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission in August 2019 by the then PTI government. Later, the PTI government reappointed him for a period of three years.
After the removal of the PTI government in April 2022, the PDM government appointed Ahsan Iqbal as Federal Minister for Planning. Soon after, differences developed between the planning minister and Khan. Subsequently, in May 2022, Khan resigned from the post due to the differences with the planning minister.
However, in August 2023, the federal government once again appointed Dr Jehanzeb Khan as the deputy chairman of Planning Commission.
