Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, is fighting for her life in a Kenyan hospital after a horrific attack allegedly perpetrated by her partner.
Cheptegei, a long-distance runner who competed in the Paris Olympics, was doused with petrol and set on fire in her home in Endebess, Trans-Nzoia County, on Sunday, according to police reports.
The alleged assailant, identified as Cheptegei’s partner Dickson Ndiema Marangach, reportedly entered her home while she and her children were attending church.
Marangach, who is said to have procured petrol in advance, set Cheptegei ablaze before also being injured by the flames.
Neighbors quickly intervened, rushing the couple to Kitale County Referral Hospital with severe burns. Local media reports suggest she has suffered burns over 75% of her body.
Both were later transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), where Cheptegei remains in intensive care with serious injuries, including extensive facial burns.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, highlighting the ongoing issue of gender-based violence in the region while the Ugandan Athletics Federation expressed deep regret, acknowledging Cheptegei’s severe injuries in a statement.
This attack follows a disturbing trend of violence against female athletes in East Africa, with the murders of Kenyan athletes Damaris Mutua and Agnes Tirop in recent years underscoring the urgent need for action.
Cheptegei’s parents are reportedly traveling from Uganda to be by her side as she battles for her life.
