Pakistan has etched its name in Scrabble history by clinching the World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) for a record fifth time. The triumph was secured by 16-year-old Affan Salman, who dominated the tournament held in Sri Lanka, winning 19 out of 23 games.
This victory marks a significant milestone, as Pakistan becomes the first nation to achieve such a feat in the championship’s history.
The WYSC, which commenced in Wollongong, Australia, in 2006, drew a competitive field of 138 players from across the globe this year. The tournament has witnessed participation from countries as diverse as Australia, Bahrain, Canada, England, and many more, highlighting its international appeal.
The WYSC, open to players under 18 as of January 1 each year, has seen its venue rotate among several countries, including Malaysia, Australia, Dubai, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom.
This year’s event in Sri Lanka was no exception, showcasing a high level of competition and strategic prowess from young wordsmiths.
Salman’s victory in the Youth Scrabble Championship not only underscores his skill but also elevates Pakistan’s status in the global Scrabble community.
