Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has expressed his disappointment with the current state of Pakistan cricket, calling for major reforms.
In a recent interview, Danish Kaneria emphasized the need for a no-nonsense approach, citing Indian cricket’s progress as an example.
Danish Kaneria pointed to India’s recent successes under the leadership of Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir, praising the straightforward attitude of the latter.
He suggested that Pakistan needs a coach with similar qualities someone unafraid to make tough decisions and who can also speak openly to the players.
“Gambhir is a fantastic cricketer and person. He tells it like it is and doesn’t engage in backdoor politics. Pakistan cricket needs someone like that, someone who makes decisions with authority and conviction,” Kaneria remarked.
Kaneria also criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its inconsistency in leadership. He pointed out the frequent changes in captaincy, particularly the removal of Babar Azam after the ODI World Cup, only to have him reinstated for the T20 World Cup.
The constant chop and change in the captaincy has created instability within the team according to the former Test cricketer.
He urged the PCB to offer long-term support to the captains whom they appoint, allowing them time to prove their worth. “Choose a captain and stick with him for at least a year. If he doesn’t deliver, then make adjustments, but give him a fair chance,” Kaneria added.
The former Test cricketer has picked 261 scalps for Pakistan in 61 Test matches and is the fourth highest wicket-taker of Pakistan in red-ball cricket after Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan.
