A new online ride service exclusively for women and transgender individuals has been launched in the city. Named ‘SheDrives,’ the service ensures that drivers and passengers are women or transgender.
Ammaz Farooqi, CEO of SheDrives, shared with The Express Tribune that the service aims to empower the transgender community and address transportation challenges. Farooqi highlighted the company’s ongoing effort to establish Pakistan’s first gender guardian school to educate and skill transgender individuals.
SheDrives is an extension of these efforts, offering a safe and supportive transportation option. The service invites women and transgender people skilled in driving motorcycles, cars, or rickshaws to join as drivers.
Safety is a top priority; the app includes a “help” button that instantly alerts the Safe Cities Authority if a rider or passenger feels threatened, enabling immediate assistance and tracking.
National Assembly member Shaista Pervaiz Malik endorsed the initiative, noting its potential to provide economic opportunities and improved travel safety for women and transgender people. Hina Pervaiz Butt, Chairperson of the Punjab Women Protection Authority, stressed the importance of reliable travel options to help women continue their education and employment.
