Pakistan Team to Take Part in World Chess Olympiad

A 10-member chess team from Pakistan is set to depart for Budapest, Hungary, today to participate in the prestigious World Chess Olympiad, scheduled from September 10 to 12. This global event will see competitors from 190 countries vying for top honors, as confirmed by Hanif Qureshi, president of the Pakistan Chess Federation.

The Pakistani contingent comprises five men and five women. The men’s team includes Mafaaz Khalid, Amir Karim, Moeen Faizan, Mohammad Luqman, and Mudassar Iqbal. On the women’s side, the team features Sahiba Shah, who will receive special assistance from the World Chess Federation due to her disability. The federation has arranged for a mover to help her maneuver the chess pieces during matches.

Joining Sahiba are Zanoobia Wasif, Mahak Gul, Sehrish, and the remarkable 12-year-old Ayat Asmi, who earned her spot on the senior team by defeating several seasoned players. Hanif Qureshi noted that visas for two players are still pending. However, the federation remains optimistic that these will be issued in time for the team’s departure. Accompanying the players are non-playing members Salim Akhtar and Shujjat Ali, who will provide support and guidance throughout the competition.

Participation in the World Chess Olympiad represents a significant opportunity for Pakistan to showcase its chess prowess on a global platform. The event not only allows players to compete against some of the best in the world but also fosters international camaraderie and the exchange of ideas within the chess community.
