After extensive teasers and leaks, Huawei has unveiled the world’s first market-available tri-folding phone. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate folds around two hinges and unfurls to a massive tablet-like screen with flagship specifications.
Design and Display
When unfolded, the device measures a mere 3.6 mm in thickness, despite its complex folding mechanism and substantial camera system borrowed from the Mate X5 foldable. Weighing in at just 298 grams, it strikes a balance between functionality and portability.
At the heart of the Mate XT Ultimate is a single, flexible LTPO OLED display that adapts to various configurations. This versatile screen boasts a 120Hz refresh rate and supports an impressive 10 billion colors. The full resolution stands at 3,184 x 2,232 pixels, dynamically adjusting to 2,232 x 2,048 and 2,232 x 1,008 pixels depending on how the device is folded.
In its fully unfolded state, the Mate XT Ultimate presents a spacious 10.2-inch diagonal display with a 16:11 aspect ratio. Folding the left section transforms it into a 7.9-inch foldable device while folding the right side creates a compact 6.4-inch bar-style phone.
Huawei markets this display as “3K,” positioning it between QHD (2K) and 4K resolutions. The screen achieves a 92% screen-to-body ratio, maximizing usable display area. The company also touts “AI computing image quality” to enhance the visual experience.
Internals and Software
Huawei doesn’t like to talk about the chipset used on its latest devices, but we can assume it is a flagship-grade SoC that comes alongside 16 GB of RAM. This can be paired with up to 1 TB of storage space, but there is no memory card slot onboard.
The software is HarmonyOS 4.2 based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) without Google services. It is loaded with multitasking features set to make the most use of the massive screen size and of course, you can’t have a phone in 2024 without AI features. These include voice-to-text, automatic split-screen, real-time document translation, and photo retouching.
Huawei has not revealed whether these are cloud-based AI features or running natively on the device.
Cameras
Huawei Mate XT Ultimate’s camera system combines elements from the Mate X5 and the company’s renowned P series. The primary shooter features a 50MP sensor with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and optical image stabilization (OIS). This main camera borrows the variable aperture technology from the P60 Pro, allowing it to adjust between f/1.4 and f/4.0 for optimal light control in various shooting conditions.
Complementing the main sensor is a 12MP telephoto lens offering 5.5x optical zoom capabilities, ideal for capturing distant subjects with clarity. For wide-angle shots, the device includes a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. Rounding out the rear camera system is a laser autofocus module, enhancing focusing speed and accuracy.
The Mate XT Ultimate features an 8MP front-facing camera discreetly housed in a punch-hole cutout on the main display. This camera serves double duty, functioning as the primary selfie camera when the device is folded into its compact configuration.
Battery and Pricing
The device incorporates three silicone-carbide composite cells, collectively providing a substantial 5,600 mAh capacity. Charging options include support for 66W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging. The Mate XT Ultimate also offers reverse charging capabilities, allowing it to power other devices wirelessly at 7.5W or via a wired connection at 5W.
Available in Black or Red colorways featuring elegant gold accents around the hinges, edges, and camera module, the Mate XT Ultimate is positioned as a premium device. Pricing reflects its high-end status, with the 256 GB model starting at $2,800. The 512 GB version is priced at $3,100, while the top-tier 1TB model commands $3,400.
Availability
Despite its impressive specifications, international availability for the Mate XT Ultimate seems unlikely. Huawei’s last global release of a foldable device, the Mate X3, occurred nearly 18 months ago. Given its positioning as a luxury, niche product, the probability of a non-ultimate version reaching markets outside China is also low.
