Gilgit-Baltistan Govt. Imposes Trekking Fees On Pakistani Mountaineers

The government of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) has significantly revised the permit fees for international mountaineers and has increased the fees for Pakistani mountaineers.

This change includes a substantial increase in the cost to climb K2, the world’s second-highest peak. A notification from the G-B Tourism, Sports, Culture, Archaeology & Museum Department last week detailed the new fee structure.

For foreign climbers who want to participate in trekking expeditions, the permit fee for ascending K2, which stands at 8,611 meters, has been set at $12,000 per group.

Individual climbers will now be charged $5,000 during the peak summer season (April to September), $2,500 in the autumn (October to November), and $1,500 in the winter (December to March).

Pakistani climbers face a new fee structure as well, with charges set at Rs100,000 for the summer, Rs50,000 for autumn, and Rs30,000 for winter. Group permits for Pakistani nationals will cost Rs30,000.

The updated policy also extends trekking fees to Pakistani mountaineers, a practice previously limited to foreign trekkers. Foreign trekking groups will now pay $100 in the winter, while individuals face charges of up to $300 during the peak season.

These revised rates reflect a broader effort to regulate and manage the influx of climbers and trekkers in the region while promoting local tourism.
