Morgue Staff in Sindh Fall Ill After Handling Decaying Bodies

In response to media reports of workers at the Khairpur Civil Hospital morgue falling ill after handling decomposing bodies, the district administration has launched an investigation.

The provincial chief secretary has requested a detailed report from the health department, following claims that the morgue staff contracted infections while managing three decayed bodies.

Local sources revealed that the morgue’s air-conditioning system had been malfunctioning for days, and essential preservation materials had run out. Despite informing the hospital authorities, no action was taken to address the issue.

Furthermore, videos shared by visitors showed hospital workers receiving treatment after falling ill, allegedly due to the lack of proper conditions for handling the bodies.

The morgue’s embalming equipment was also reported to be out of order for a long time. Workers at the facility reportedly refrained from bathing or shrouding the bodies due to fear of further infections from bacteria and insects.

Taking note of the situation, the Sukkur commissioner has ordered a full inquiry into the morgue’s conditions. A committee has been formed to investigate the malfunctioning equipment and determine responsibility. The Khairpur District Health Officer has been tasked with submitting a report within a week to ensure the necessary steps are taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
