Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed the appointment of Sanath Jayasuriya as the permanent head coach of the national men’s team.
This decision follows a series of commendable performances by the team under Jayasuriya’s interim leadership, which began in July after the resignations of former head coach Chris Silverwood and consultant coach Mahela Jayawardene.
The duo stepped down following Sri Lanka’s underwhelming performance in the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Jayasuriya, a legendary figure in Sri Lankan cricket, has revitalized the team.
His tenure as interim coach saw the Lions secure a 2-0 victory in the ODI series against India in August and a notable Test win against England at the Oval.
The team also achieved a historic first Test victory against New Zealand in the ongoing series, with prospects of clinching another win.
The impact of Jayasuriya‘s leadership extends beyond the field, as he has been praised for boosting player morale and confidence in the dressing room.
Former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews lauded the 55-year-old coach, stating, “Sanath Jayasuriya has given us confidence and has done a wonderful job grooming young players.
His influence has made a massive difference.”Jayasuriya’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to build on the momentum and continue the development of a promising squad.”
Jayasuriya’s experience and leadership are expected to be crucial to their success in the upcoming months when Sri Lanka will face formidable opposition such as the West Indies.
Sri Lanka will take on West Indies in a three-match T20I series in October.
