The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise owners have unanimously rejected a proposal to offer direct contracts to star players.
The decision comes as the league faces scheduling challenges due to international cricket commitments, including the triangular series and the Champions Trophy in 2025, which have disrupted the traditional PSL calendar.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed a new window for the PSL, from April 10 to May 25, to accommodate these international fixtures. However, this period overlaps with the Indian Premier League (IPL), raising concerns about player availability and potential revenue losses. In response, the PCB suggested allowing franchises to sign direct contracts with marquee players, enabling each team to secure 1 to 2 high-profile cricketers. Despite this, the franchises have rejected the proposal, citing an unimpressive list of available players.
The PCB had circulated a list of players who did not participate in the last IPL, along with other potentially available cricketers, to the franchise owners. However, the list failed to meet expectations, leading to its rejection. During a recent online meeting, team owners and representatives communicated their decision to the PCB.
Adding to the complexity, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering holding an IPL auction in Saudi Arabia next month. The outcome of this auction could further impact player availability for the PSL. Consequently, the PSL draft is now scheduled for late December or early January, pending clarity on the situation.
