Mohsin Naqvi Gives Update on Babar Azam’s Captaincy Replacement

In the wake of Babar Azam’s resignation as Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has addressed the growing speculation regarding his successor.

Babar, widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s premier batsmen, announced his resignation last week, citing the heavy demands of captaincy and a desire to concentrate more on his batting performance.

Babar’s announcement has sparked widespread discussion about who will take over the leadership role. During a recent media briefing, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the significance of the captaincy and the need for a thoughtful selection process. “I have told them to take a decision after careful consideration because the captain’s position is important,” Naqvi stated.

This is not the first time Babar has stepped down from a leadership position. His initial tenure as captain concluded in November 2023 following Pakistan’s underwhelming performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India. Despite this setback, Babar was reinstated as the white-ball captain in March 2024, leading the team through a series of T20I matches against New Zealand, Ireland, and England.

During his second tenure, Babar led Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 where the team faced a historic low by exiting in the group stage after unexpected losses to the United States and India. These results have intensified the scrutiny of the team’s leadership and performance strategies.

At the moment, there are rumors and reports that wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan is being considered for the job.
