Pakistan has released leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood and left-arm orthodox spinner Noman Ali from their Test squad on the first day of the opening Test against England in Multan.
This decision, confirmed by the team’s media manager, reduces the squad to 15 players, with only three reserves remaining: Mohammad Huraira, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Mir Hamza.
Zahid Mahmood, who was a late addition to the squad, joined as the 16th player just a day after Pakistan initially announced their 15-member lineup for the first Test.
Mahmood, who made his Test debut during England’s 2022 tour of Pakistan, has shown promise by taking 12 wickets in just two Test matches over four innings. Despite his potential, the decision to release him reflects Pakistan’s current strategic priorities and squad balance considerations.
Noman Ali, once a staple in Pakistan’s Test side, has faced a challenging year. He was sidelined due to acute appendicitis last December, which forced him to miss the Australia tour.
Additionally, he was not included in Pakistan’s 17-player squad for the Bangladesh Tests earlier this year. Noman made his return to the squad as a replacement for the injured Khurram Shahzad ahead of the series against England.
The decision to trim the squad to 15 players is part of Pakistan’s effort to provide focused attention and resources to the selected players. However, this move also limits the team’s flexibility in case of injuries or the need for concussion substitutes during the Test match. The remaining reserve players, Mohammad Huraira, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Mir Hamza, will be on standby to step in if necessary.
