Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui is expected to be out of action for a while after undergoing a heart procedure, according to sources from the club.
The Moroccan fullback was taken off at halftime during United’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Sunday and later withdrew from the Morocco squad for the international break due to experiencing heart palpitations. Mazraoui has undergone a minor corrective procedure and is expected to be sidelined for atleast two months.
This is not the first time the defender has faced heart issues in his career. In 2023, while playing for Bayern Munich, he was out for three months due to heart complications following a COVID-19 infection. Mazraoui tested positive for COVID-19 during the World Cup in Qatar and later experienced issues while on holiday after the tournament. Bayern Munich attributed the problem to a “mild inflammation of his pericardium.” After regular health checks, he returned to playing in March 2023.
Although Manchester United knew about his previous condition at Bayern, this current issue is unrelated. Since joining from Germany this summer, Mazraoui has made 10 appearances for United. The club has not set a clear timeline for his return, adding more pressure to manager Erik ten Hag, who is already dealing with multiple player injuries.
Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Amad Diallo have all withdrawn from international duty due to injuries, and Harry Maguire will be out for weeks after an injury in the Villa match. Ten Hag is also facing a shortage of full-backs, with Luke Shaw out since February, though there is hope for his return after the international break, and Tyrell Malacia, who hasn’t played for over a year following a knee operation.
