SAIC Motors has officially unveiled the MG ES5, a pure-electric compact SUV. This family-friendly SUV offers three different range options: 425 km, 515 km, and 525 km.
Previously known as the “S5,” the SUV has been rebranded as the “ES5” and is expected to be priced between 100,000 and 150,000 yuan (between Rs. 3.9 million to Rs. 5.85 million) in China. Its market launch is set for later this year, and there are plans for its export, as a test version was seen in Europe in August.
MG ES5 is built on SAIC’s Nebula pure-electric platform and features a five-link rear suspension system. It measures 4476 mm in length, 1849 mm in width, and 1621 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2730 mm. Two curb weight options are available (depending on the battery size): 1685 kg and 1740 kg. Additionally, the official maximum usable space inside the vehicle is reported to be 4.24 square meters.
Design-wise, the front features a sleek, modern look with a closed-off front fascia, narrow sharp headlights, and split grilles on the lower side. Other exterior elements include conventional door handles, blackened side mirrors, silver roof racks, and Y-shaped tail lights. The ES5 offers two rim sizes: 17 inches and 18 inches.
MG ES5 is powered by a rear electric motor producing 125 kW (168 hp) and 250 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds with a top speed of 170 km/h.
The lithium iron phosphate battery packs, available in either 49.1 kWh or 62.2 kWh capacities, are supplied by the CATL-SAIC joint venture. The vehicle offers CLTC driving ranges of 425 km, 515 km, and 525 km, which will translate to 400 km, 485 km, and 500 km as the CLTC range often exaggerates the real-life range. Notably, the 110 mm-thick battery pack is claimed to be the world’s thinnest.
Inside, the cabin features a modern, central control screen layout, an instrument panel, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. While the screen dimensions haven’t been disclosed yet, the center console has a hollow design for extra storage, and it includes two cupholders along with wireless charging capabilities for mobile phones.
The vehicle is also equipped with a panoramic sunroof, enhancing the sense of interior space.
With its blend of modern design, performance, and technology, MG ES5 is set to make a significant impact in the electric SUV market.
