KL Rahul, who has captained the Lucknow Super Giants since IPL 2022, is not expected to be retained by the franchise and will likely participate in the upcoming mega auction for the 2025 season.
Rahul is the leading run-scorer for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) over the past three seasons. He finished as the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2022, amassing 616 runs. However, an injury sidelined him for the latter half of the 2023 season. Despite this setback, he bounced back to be LSG’s top scorer in 2024, contributing 520 runs.
While he is known for consistently accumulating runs, his strike rate has faced criticism of late with it being 136.12 IPL 2024. This scrutiny is particularly notable as the league has witnessed significantly higher scoring rates over the last two seasons.
Following a heavy loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad last season, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka was observed having an animated conversation with KL Rahul on the field. This interaction, which was broadcast on television, sparked speculation about Rahul’s future with the team.
It has been reported that during a recent meeting with LSG’s owners, KL Rahul did not confirm whether he would accept a retention offer if one were made. The deadline for the ten franchises to submit their lists of retained players to the IPL is October 31. Ahead of the mega auction for the 2025 season, teams can retain up to six players, with a maximum of five being capped internationals.
