60 Universities Are Operating Without Permanent VCs or Rectors

A recent government report has revealed a significant leadership vacuum in Pakistan’s higher education sector, with 60 universities currently operating without permanent vice-chancellors or rectors.

The document, which provides an overview of the current state of academic administration, highlights that out of a total of 157 universities, only 97 have appointed permanent heads, raising concerns about governance and the quality of education.

According to the report, 57 universities are functioning with vice chancellors or rectors in temporary or acting roles. Alarmingly, three universities are reportedly operating entirely without a vice chancellor.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, three universities remain without appointed leaders, reflecting a regional challenge in maintaining effective academic administration.

The situation is no better in the federal capital, where six universities are led by acting vice chancellors. Punjab faces the most significant crisis, with 22 universities lacking permanent leadership.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has 19 universities without permanent vice-chancellors, while five universities in Balochistan and four in Sindh are similarly affected.

Furthermore, one university in Azad Jammu and Kashmir is without a permanent vice chancellor.

Experts in the education sector are expressing growing concern over the implications of this leadership crisis. The absence of consistent and stable leadership can hinder decision-making processes, disrupt academic standards, and ultimately impact the educational experience for students.
