Mazda Launches EZ-6 Affordable Electric Car

Mazda has launched a new electric vehicle EZ-6 in China. This model is a product of the Changan Mazda joint venture, starting at around $19,600 in the local market. Mazda is also considering expanding sales to other regions, including Europe.

EZ-6 is available in two main versions: an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) and a fully electric model.

The EREV version comes with two battery choices, either an 18.9 kWh or a 28.4 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate pack, both paired with a 1.5-liter engine that only charges the batteries. These options allow for an electric-only range of 130 to 200 km, depending on battery size, based on China’s CLTC standard. The EREV’s electric motor delivers 215 horsepower and powers the rear wheels.

For those looking at the all-electric version, there are 56.1-kWh and 68.8-kWh battery options. This version has a stronger motor, providing 255 horsepower and 318 Nm of torque. It also powers the rear wheels and offers an estimated range of up to 600 km.

Pricing for the EREV models ranges from $19,600 to $23,800. The fully electric versions are slightly more, costing between $22,400 and $25,200. With a 114-inch wheelbase and a length of 194 inches, the EZ-6 is close in size to the Hyundai Ioniq 6.

Mazda’s experience with the EZ-6 in China will influence its future electric vehicle plans, especially if it expands into Europe and North America. The performance and reception of the EZ-6 will play a key role in shaping Mazda’s EV strategy globally.
