Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) former chairman Ramiz Raja has sent a stern warning to Pakistan cricket’s governing body over its treatment of foreign coaches which could hinder its search for qualified replacements.
In a turbulent week for Pakistan cricket, Raja has expressed concerns about the ramifications of Gary Kirsten’s abrupt departure, fearing it could deter high-profile international coaching candidates in the future. Kirsten, a World Cup-winning coach, resigned on Monday as head coach of Pakistan’s ODI and T20I sides, just six months into his two-year contract and on the eve of Pakistan’s white-ball tour of Australia.
Kirsten’s resignation, without having led the team in a single ODI, marks another tumultuous chapter for the PCB, one that could have lasting effects on the team’s reputation.
“When you look for international coaches, the backlash surrounding Kirsten’s departure will make it tough for Pakistan to attract talent,” Raja noted in a media session prior to the Australia tour. “Once you bring someone on board, you need to give them clear direction and support,” he added, questioning whether Kirsten had received the clarity needed in his role.
The importance of his words is underscored by the fact that Shane Watson and Darren Sammy reportedly turned down similar offers to coach Pakistan earlier in the year.
Tensions reportedly arose between Kirsten and newly appointed Test coach Jason Gillespie after both were stripped of their selection powers following Pakistan’s first Test loss to England. This move, paired with the sudden formation of a new selection panel that includes umpire Aleem Dar, has left Gillespie “thoroughly unimpressed,” according to sources close to the team.
Gillespie decided to remain in the role despite demotion but it is uncertain how long he will carry on. The Australian is currently shepherding the squad in his native country as interim coach as Pakistan continues to look for a permanent replacement.
In his reign as PCB’s head, Ramiz himself did not hire any foreign talent but has constantly advocated for Pakistan to hire more international coaches to usher in a new era for Pakistan’s cricket team.
