Is Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Losing Sheen After Recent Changes?

Quaid-e-Azam Trophy has long held the title of the most prestigious domestic cricketing competition in Pakistan but the first round has left fans unimpressed with many questioning recent changes that seem to have downgraded its prestige to a Grade-II level.

Pakistan Cricket Board once again revamped its structure before the start which underlined its inability to streamline the domestic operations as PCB continues to put out fires on many fronts both locally and internationally.

The marquee cricket event traditionally saw eight regional teams in Grade I and an equal number in Grade II while the format allowed the top Grade II team to earn promotion, while the lowest Grade-I team risked relegation.

This year, however, the PCB’s expansion includes all 16 regions, with major hubs like Karachi and Lahore fielding two teams each. This restructuring has boosted the total from eight to 18 teams, sparking concerns over the tournament’s competitive edge.

Originally scheduled for October 20 with 73 matches across two groups, the PCB delayed the start to October 26, reducing matches to 49. Additionally, reports suggest player match fees have been slashed from Rs100,000 to around Rs30,000, though the PCB has yet to confirm this year’s exact figures

Other cuts include downgrades in accommodations, with players housed in three-star hotels rather than the five-star amenities provided last year.

Additionally, many of this year’s venues are rarely used for first-class cricket, reinforcing perceptions that the tournament is being treated as a secondary event.

Logistical issues continue to plague the teams as well with several team managers reporting delays in receiving funds, forcing them to finance accommodations and other expenses out of pocket.

The maelstrom surrounding the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy perfectly encapsulates PCB’s current situation. With all the preference reserved for the upcoming champions trophy, it seems that PCB is happy to let domestic competitions play second fiddle before revamping the competition once again during the next cycle.
