Is ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi Joining PCB?

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi has reportedly emerged as one of the leading candidates under consideration for the prestigious role of Head of Pakistan Women’s Cricket, sources close to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) say.

The PCB is actively searching for a new head following the recent departure of Tania Mallick, who stepped down to pursue other career opportunities.

Mallick, whose tenure began in October 2021, was instrumental in advancing women’s cricket, particularly at the grassroots level. Her efforts received international recognition, including a spot on the ICC Women’s Committee as one of two representatives from Full Member countries.

In a statement, PCB COO Salman Naseer commended her commitment, stating,

Tania worked with dedication to uplift women’s cricket in Pakistan, making strides at the grassroots level to expand the pool of players.

Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi has reportedly also made the list shortlisted by PCB as a replacement. An ASP in Pakistan Police, she is a well-known name who rose to public attention in February after intervening to protect a woman from a mob attack in Lahore’s Ichra Bazaar.

Former Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, a prominent figure during PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s time as interim Chief Minister of Punjab, is also said to be a strong candidate for the position. 

The shortlist of names is likely to raise some concerns among relevant parties as most members have personal ties with PCB’s chairman but the outcome remains to be seen.

Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi is reportedly already serving as a Personal Staff Officer in the Interior Ministry headed by none other than Mr Naqvi.

 This new appointment, expected to be finalized soon, holds significance as the PCB looks to build on its recent progress and further uplift the profile of women’s cricket in Pakistan.
