ECB Encourages Inclusion of More Pakistani Players in ‘The Hundred’

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is set to sell six franchises of its innovative league, The Hundred, next year, targeting earnings of £600 million.

As part of the process, the ECB aims to promote inclusivity by encouraging franchise owners to include Pakistani players, addressing long-standing concerns over their exclusion by Indian-owned teams.

Historically, Indian billionaires owning franchises across global leagues have often overlooked Pakistani players due to political tensions. The ECB is determined to eliminate such practices, warning potential buyers against discrimination and advocating for the inclusion of Pakistani cricketing superstars.

Pakistani players like Haris Rauf, Usama Mir, Mohammad Haris, and Imad Wasim made their mark in The Hundred last season, showcasing their immense talent. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has also expressed support for increasing Pakistani representation in the tournament.

PSL Faces Tough Competition Amid Concurrent IPL

For the first time, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Indian Premier League (IPL) will run simultaneously, creating significant challenges for the PSL. With many international players tied to IPL contracts, the PCB must work strategically to attract top-tier talent and ensure the league’s competitiveness.

The PSL could benefit from notable players being left out of IPL franchises this year. Stars like David Warner, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, and Adil Rashid have not found teams in the IPL, presenting an opportunity for the PSL to secure these marquee players.

As The Hundred prepares for its new chapter under private ownership, the ECB’s commitment to inclusivity signals a positive shift in the global cricketing landscape, with Pakistani players poised to play a more significant role in the league’s future.
