Huawei has unveiled the Mate X6, a significant upgrade from last year’s model. The device boasts an impressively thin unfolded profile, measuring less than 5 mm. It features larger displays, and updated cameras, and comes pre-installed with Huawei’s HarmonyOS Next.
Design and Display
The Mate X6’s foldable inner display measures 7.93 inches and utilizes LTPO technology for a variable refresh rate and power saving. This near 1:1 aspect ratio screen offers a resolution of 2,440 x 2,240 pixels, a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, a peak brightness of 1,800 nits, and support for over a billion colors.
The phone’s 6.45-inch outer display is also an LTPO OLED panel with a 1080p resolution. It mirrors the inner display’s refresh rate capabilities but boasts an even brighter 2,500 nits peak brightness.
The new Mate X6 also gets a three-dimensional vapor chamber with liquid cooling and several graphite layers, which should help support gaming and other demanding tasks. There is also Kunlun Glass protection on the outer display and an improved hinge with smoother motion and durable rocket steel.
Internals and Software
In typical Huawei fashion, the Mate X6’s chipset details remain a mystery. It’s expected to utilize the Kirin 9100, a 6nm processor that lags behind the performance of the current flagship chipsets.
This new foldable is among the first Huawei devices to showcase HarmonyOS Next. Built on an in-house kernel, this new operating system incorporates numerous AI-powered features driven by a domestically developed large language model (LLM).
You also get exclusive split-screen functionalities such as note-taking during video lectures, document preview and summarization, and tools for easily making social media content.
Cameras
The main camera setup is a bit of a Frankenstein of sensors taken from different Huawei phones.
The primary 50MP camera, equipped with an f/1.4-f/4.0 variable aperture, is inherited from the Pura 70 Pro+. The 48MP telephoto lens, offering a 90mm equivalent focal length and up to 4x optical zoom, comes from the Mate 60 Pro. The 40MP autofocus ultra-wide-angle lens is also present in the Pura 70 Ultra.
The fourth camera is a hyperspectral sensor capable of capturing over 1.5 million colors. This sensor works with the other lenses, enhancing their performance and color accuracy through Huawei’s XD Fusion engine.
Battery and Pricing
The phone doesn’t shy away from battery capacity, either at a solid 5,200 mAh alongside 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, or 7.5W reverse wireless charging support.
You can choose between five colors for the Huawei Mate X6 in China including Gray and White with a glass/plastic finish, and Black, Red, and Blue with a leathery finish. The phone starts at $1800 in its home market.
