Hyundai has issued a recall for 226,118 vehicles due to a potential issue with rearview cameras that may fail. This recall affects several models, including the 2021-2022 Hyundai Santa Fe (standard and hybrid trims), the 2022 Santa Fe plug-in hybrid, and the 2021-2022 Hyundai Elantra. Additionally, 1,186 units of the 2022 Elantra N performance sedan are also affected.
The issue arises from defective circuit boards in the rearview camera system. These circuit boards may have insufficient solder joints that can crack over time, leading to a failure in the rearview camera, and violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 111. This standard is related to rear visibility, making the defect an important safety concern.
Hyundai has developed a solution for this problem: they will replace the old rearview cameras with updated ones featuring a new design. The recall notification process will begin in early January 2025, with affected owners and dealerships being contacted. At this point, Hyundai has reported no known accidents, injuries, or property damage related to the faulty cameras.
This is the largest recall for Hyundai in 2024. Earlier this year, Hyundai also recalled 186,588 2015-2016 Elantras due to faulty emergency trunk release latches and 145,235 EVs, including Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, and Electrified trims for the GV70 and G80, due to a charging unit issue that could result in a loss of drive power.
