Lucid Motors is exploring two-speed transmissions to improve the efficiency of its electric vehicles (EVs). While the company already produces some of the world’s most efficient EVs, it aims to push the boundaries further with this new technology. Other automakers, such as Porsche, have adopted two-speed transmissions to enhance the range of their EVs, and now Lucid is considering how it can apply this innovation in its unique way.
Lucid’s current electric drive system is already known for being compact and efficient. The system works by using two planetary gearsets to reduce the high speed of the electric motor to a suitable level for the wheels. This design helps keep the drive unit small and lightweight. By introducing a two-speed transmission, Lucid plans to make the electric motor operate more efficiently at different driving speeds. The system would switch between two gear ratios using one-way clutches, which could improve the motor’s performance under various driving conditions.
The potential benefits of this technology are significant. Previous studies have suggested that two-speed transmissions can improve efficiency by around five percent, depending on driving conditions. Lucid, however, is aiming for even greater gains.
CEO Peter Rawlinson has stated that the company is targeting a range of 9.6 kilometers per kilowatt-hour, an increase from the current 8 kilometers per kilowatt-hour achieved by Lucid Air. This improvement would extend the vehicle’s range and make charging more efficient, as the system would require less energy to charge the battery.
Lucid is also preparing to launch its first SUV, the Gravity, followed by a new mid-size car. While it’s still unclear whether the two-speed transmission will be used in these models, there is a possibility that this technology could be incorporated into them. An updated version of the Lucid Air sedan might also feature this new drivetrain system, although this remains speculative.
