Lahore to Introduce 400 Electric Buses to Combat Smog

In a major step to address Lahore’s smog problem, the Punjab government has announced the introduction of 400 electric buses as part of a environmental initiative aimed at improving air quality and reducing pollution in the city. This initiative, which includes a range of measures to tackle the city’s severe smog, was revealed by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb during a press conference focused on climate change and anti-smog efforts.

The electric buses will play a key role in curbing air pollution caused by conventional vehicles, which are major contributors to smog in Lahore. The initiative is part of a 10-year anti-smog plan introduced by the Punjab government, which includes a combination of technological advancements and policy reforms to tackle the environmental crisis. The buses will not only reduce emissions but will also help in transitioning to more sustainable, eco-friendly public transportation.

To begin with, 27 electric buses are set to arrive in Lahore by January 2025, with a total of 400 electric buses planned for operation across the city in the coming months. This effort is part of a wider push to transition 5.2 million motorbikes in Lahore to electric models as well, further contributing to cleaner air and a greener transport network.

The introduction of electric buses is a critical component of the government’s larger strategy to reduce smog levels, which have been a recurring problem in Lahore, especially during the winter months. The government has also been working on other fronts, such as closing factories emitting excessive smoke, regulating brick kilns, and promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

The electric buses are expected to significantly improve air quality in Lahore, which has long struggled with high pollution levels. The initiative aligns with the government’s goal of reducing smog by 38% compared to the previous year and continues efforts to further lower pollution levels in the future.
