Joe Root Passes Indian Legend After Latest Record

Joe Root, the former England captain, added another accolade to his glittering career by becoming the fourth player in cricket history to notch up 100 fifty-plus scores in Test cricket.

Root achieved this milestone on the second day of the second Test against New Zealand in Wellington, further solidifying his status as one of the modern greats of the game.

After being dismissed for 280 in the first innings, England skittled New Zealand out for a mere 125. In the second innings, England’s batters put on a dominant display. Root, coming in at No. 4, capitalized on the platform set by Duckett and Bethell. He recorded his fifth Test fifty in 2024, which complements the five centuries he has already scored this year.

Joe Root’s remarkable consistency in the past four years has seen him maintain an average of 56.29, making him a pillar of England’s batting lineup.

Joe Root’s latest feat places him among cricket’s elite Test batters. He surpassed Rahul Dravid’s record of 99 fifty-plus scores and is now fourth on the all-time list. With 151 Tests under his belt and nearing 13,000 Test runs, Root has proven himself as one of the most reliable players in the format.

Test Batters with the Most Fifty-Plus Scores

Player Matches 50-plus Scores
Sachin Tendulkar 200 119
Jacques Kallis 166 103
Ricky Ponting 168 103
Joe Root 151 100
Rahul Dravid 164 99
Shivnarine Chanderpaul 164 96
Allan Border 156 90
Alastair Cook 161 90
Kumar Sangakkara 134 90
Mahela Jayawardene 149 84

Root, the only active player in the top ten, is on course to surpass Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting (103 fifty-plus scores each) soon. While Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 119 remains a longer-term target, Root’s current form suggests he may well rewrite history.
