TCL to Create Generative AI Short Films for TV Ads

The television industry is witnessing a significant shift, with advertising now a central element of TV software. TV manufacturers are increasingly exploring the potential of their operating systems to deliver targeted ads and track user behavior.

Tomorrow, TV maker TCL will unveil a series of short films on its free streaming platform, showcasing a novel approach to monetizing TV ownership and film production. This strategy leverages generative AI and targeted advertising to reduce production costs.

TCL is launching five short films as part of a broader initiative to familiarize audiences with content created using generative AI. These films, which will be prominently featured on TCL’s free ad-supported streaming television service, TCLtv+, represent a significant step in this direction.

The short films blend traditional and cutting-edge techniques. Some feature recognizable actors, such as Kellita Smith, known for her role as Wanda on “The Bernie Mac Show.” Others showcase characters entirely generated by AI. According to a report today from 404 Media, which attended a screening, all of the films incorporated generative AI for special effects and/or animations and were produced in a 12-week timeframe. AI tools used in this production included ComfyUI, Nuke, and Runway.

Despite the use of generative AI in their production, TCL’s short films were created and executed by human talent. The writing, directing, and musical scores were all created by humans, some of whom may be familiar to audiences.

At a recent screening, Chris Regina, TCL’s chief content officer for North America, emphasized the significant human element involved, stating that the project engaged “over 50 animators, editors, effects artists, professional researchers, [and] scientists.”
