70% of Buildings Lack Fire Safety Measures in Karachi

City planners, engineers, and architects raised concerns on Tuesday about the Sindh Building Control Authority’s (SBCA) failure to enforce building codes in Karachi.

Speaking at the “Second National Fire Safety Conference and Risk-Based Award Ceremony,” they highlighted the alarming rise in fire incidents due to illegal multi-story construction lacking fire safety systems.

Experts noted that Karachi has recorded over 2,900 fire incidents in 2024 so far, compared to 2,228 in 2023. By year-end, the figure is expected to surpass 3,000. They revealed that 70% of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings lack proper fire safety measures, creating a serious threat to millions of lives.

FPA President Kunwar Waseem criticized the lack of adherence to safety regulations, emphasizing the need for collective action from both the government and businesses. “We cannot afford further delays as this negligence leads to substantial financial and human losses,” he said.

Tariq Moeen, FPA Director of Training, pointed out that many prominent buildings on I.I. Chundrigar Road and Shahrah-e-Faisal lack emergency exits. Meanwhile, Rescue 1122’s Dr. Rizwan Naseer called for nationwide fire safety training at schools and workplaces to improve emergency preparedness and reduce casualties.
