Four firms have successfully completed a feasibility study for a proposed 10-kilometer tunnel in the Kalar Kahar Salt Range along the M-2 Motorway, which links Lahore and Islamabad.
The initiative aims to address the growing number of accidents on this stretch, according to a report by 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
The tunnel’s construction is expected to significantly enhance safety and reduce travel time between the two cities by approximately 25 to 35 minutes.
The General Manager of the National Highway Authority (NHA) confirmed that four companies carried out the study and stated that efforts are underway to appoint a consultant for the project.
It is worth noting that the proposal for the tunnel was initially put forward during a meeting of the steering committee.

They should additionally consider actually maintaining the road conditions on all motorways. They quietly managed to increase toll rates but failed to use this amount at the right place.
The growing accidents were because of poor driving practices, poorly maintained vehicles and over-speeding in this particular section. The tunnel is one way to handle the situation but the root cause will remain as it is.
Money of poor country should not be waisted. NHA should first convert the two lines motorway into three lines from Abdul Hakeem to Multan toll plaza.
Will there be economic justification of tunnel on M2?
I think you do not have an idea of the toll collection amount, it’s huge
Yes those rulers from Lhr and vying BTW Ibd will reach 30 min earlier.
Yes dear, To make some Commission and send it to London or Panama or to Swiss account…
So that there kids will enjoy rest of life and poor remain poorest
Again more news of development in Punjab, whereas Sindh remains neglected.
Had you raised voice when billions of rupees were embezzled by the relevant officers of sindh when this amount was released by fed govt in connection with purchase of land for construction of motorway from sukkur to Hyderabad???
It is much needed at this site of the motorway. Not only the journey will be safe but also time and fuel will be saved.
Excellent project
Faisalabad -Gojra motorway needs to be connected with Hakla-Dera Ismail Khan motorway (CPEC Highway) for ease of travelling between Lahore and D.I.Khan/Baluchistan
It is good but completing Lahore islamabad via Sialkot is also very important. We have equipment, we have engineers and labour we have raw materials locally available we can build many times more high ways and roads and build new cities. It is only positive approach and dare to correct old thoughts. HONESTLY AND SINCERITY WHAT MATTERS.
A motorway using Sialkot axis will benefit many more people than the present M2 axis which passes through comparatively unpopulated area. But the main aim of our planners is to earn more commissions to enable their families to settle abroad. A 10 kilometer tunnel will bring much more commission than an Islamabad Lahore motorway via Sialkot
The fact is that Pakistan os already debt ridden and these mockeries do not bring anything on the food table of average Pakistani who now falls is lower middle or poor class category do something which enhances economic strength enhances foreign exchange earnings rather than using public funds just to make the ride more comfortable.
Do something in Baluchistan which is at the brink of breaking up from Pakistan.
Punjab is not Pakistan so stop thos mockery and do something for real enough kick backs and rishwats pmease
Focus on repairing and extension of GT road. Secondly complete Lahore Sialkot Islamabad track instead of waisting money on tunnel. NHA authority is humbly requested to take care of public money of poor nation of poor country.
Kalkahar area when build was the worst thing in whole M2 crown. But at the building tunnel wasn’t feasible due to salt range. I hope now the technology allows to build tunnel in this area. Other was alternative route like Sialkot is also another viable option.
Tunnel through the salt range needs a special review. Secondly, ineffective traffic control is the main cause of accidents in the salt range. It has already a very slow traffic required to move which is itself a good mean to avoid accidents, provided it is rigidly enforced. It has been observed that, VIP traffic with convoys of security are the biggest violators.
Tunnels exist on pesh-rwp motorway. It should be been done in the start. However support the proposition
When you have (R) all over the place! Nothing’s gonna change!
