A dedicated team of modders is working to bring multiplayer to Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man on PC, a feature the original game nor its sequel offered. A trailer shared by the team demonstrates that their efforts are already yielding results, with a functioning multiplayer mod in development.
Multiplayer references were discovered in the game’s code as far back as two years ago, indicating that Insomniac may have explored this concept during development. These remnants now pave the way for an ambitious project by modders.
Insomniac did explore multiplayer Spider-Man concepts in the past. In 2021, leaked information revealed a canceled project titled Spider-Man: The Great Web. This cooperative multiplayer game would have allowed up to five players to take on the roles of characters from the Spider family, including Spider-Gwen.
The mod team has provided a glimpse of their progress and shared a detailed FAQ on Discord. While there’s no official release date yet, the mod supports up to 16 players in free-roam multiplayer. Players can connect via Steam invites or by adding a host’s IP address. Although PvP isn’t currently a feature, the team has hinted it might be explored in the future.
Mod compatibility is a key focus. Players can share mods like suit designs, provided all participants have the same modifications installed. The mod currently works on the Steam and Epic Games Store versions of Marvel’s Spider-Man and focuses on free-roam content, with plans to eventually integrate story missions.
For now, the multiplayer mod is exclusive to Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018), but the team has expressed interest in porting it to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 once it launches on PC in early 2025. As development progresses, fans eagerly anticipate its launch.
