Australia’s Nathan Lyon achieved a major milestone in his illustrious Test career on the final day of the fourth BGT test against India at the MCG.
Nathan Lyon surpassed India’s recently-retired Ravichandran Ashwin on the all-time Test wicket taker rankings during Australia’s commanding 184-run victory over the visitors.
Lyon played a pivotal role in the win, delivering a match-winning performance with the ball. He claimed 3 wickets for 96 runs in India’s first innings and followed it up with 2 for 37 in the second innings. Lyon’s most significant contribution came in the 80th over of India’s second innings, when he trapped Mohammed Siraj LBW for a single run, sealing the victory and helping Australia inch closer to the series win.
This crucial wicket took Lyon’s career tally to 538 Test wickets, moving him ahead of Ashwin’s total of 537.
With this achievement, Lyon now occupies seventh place in the list of all-time Test wicket-takers. The 36-year-old has taken 538 wickets in 133 matches, while Ashwin, who retired on December 18, 2024, finished his career with 537 wickets in 106 matches.
